Turismo y desarrollo local

El turismo constituye motor de desarrollo local en áreas rurales, según se desprende de la experiencia del municipio de San Francisco Zapotitlán, en el departamento de Retalhuleu, en Guatemala, donde se ubica el centro recreativo IRTRA, que recibe tantos visitantes como turistas extranjeros el país. Dicho municipio registra una reducción importante, mayor a los demás municipios, en el nivel de incidencia de la pobreza, entre 1998 y 2006. La hipótesis que se sostiene en este artículo es que dicha caída se asocia al derrame económico que
genera el turismo, en especial interno. A efecto de comprobar dicha hipótesis, se realiza un contraste de diferencia de medias proporcionales, del municipio analizado respecto a los otros municipios del departamento, en lo que respecta al nivel de pobreza y su reducción. Los resultados no permiten rechazar la hipótesis formulada.

Abstract: Tourism is a factor of local development in rural areas, according to what can be inferred from the experience of the San Francisco Zapotitlán municipality, in the department of Retalhuleu, Guatemala. Here is located the recreational centre IRTRA, which receives both local visitors and foreign tourists. Between 1998 and 2006, such municipality registered an important reduction in poverty levels, bigger than in other municipalities. The hypothesis defended in this article is that such reduction is associated with the economic spillover
generated by tourism, especially the domestic one. To prove such a hypothesis, a difference of proportional averages contrast is made between the analysed municipality and the other municipalities of the department, regarding poverty levels and their reduction. The results do not allow to refute the formulated hypothesis.
