Bournemouth University Department of Tourism and Hospitality is pleased to
invite you to the international conference on The Visitor Economy:
Strategies and Innovations, organised in collaboration with our global
partners.

The conference brings together leading academics and industry researchers
to exchange and share their experiences, knowledge and ideas on all
aspects of the visitor economy. In addition to our conference scientific
sessions, we would like to invite you to visit Bournemouth. We look
forward to welcoming you at Bournemouth University.

The visitor economy includes all activities which contribute to visitors¹
experiences. At the core are the components of the tourism product, such
as accommodation, food, restaurants, transport and attractions. The
concept, however, is much broader as the economy caters for the needs of
all visitors, not just tourists. It embraces all activities,
infrastructure and services provided to make each visitor's experience
possible. To create a successful visitor economy, it is necessary to
manage each individual component of the economy efficiently with a focus
on the needs of visitors.

This makes the sector a complex one. Businesses are constantly introducing
innovations to maintain their competitive advantages. These strategies and
innovations are used to build resilience into destinations and businesses
to improve their international competitiveness. These may be achieved by
implementing innovations leading to cost reduction, improvement in
productivity, improvement in the quality of product and the creation of
new products or better delivery systems.

The themes of this conference will include, but are not limited to:

Dan Ashe Bio: Dan is the President and Chief Executive Officer of an organization of 232 aquariums, zoos and science centers, accredited by AZA and meeting the highest standards of animal care, education and conservation, and more than 6,000 individual members. A lifelong animal conservationist, Dan joined AZA in January 2017 after serving as the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for nearly six years, successfully leading the agency, and its thousands of employees, during a period of great challenges. In the early 1980’s, with collaborators at the National Zoo and National Cancer Institute (USA), Dr. Marker helped identify the cheetah’s lack of genetic variation. In 1988, she became the Executive Director of the Center for New Opportunities in Animal Health Sciences, based at Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo, and continues to serve as a NOAHS Research Fellow. In 1996, she was made a vice-chair of the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN) Species Survival Commission’s (SSC) Cat Specialist Group and now serves as a member of the core management group.

ATLAS Annual Conferences 2017

Destinations past, present and future

After ten years the ATLAS annual conference goes back again to Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

The Conference will take place between 12th and 16th September 2017 at the campus of the School of Technology and Management. The Conference would be organised by the Tourism Laboratory, headed by Carlos Fernandes.

The way in which places are being transformed by tourism was the subject of a recent ATLAS publication (Russo and Richards, 2016), which described how destinations are increasingly produced, consumed and negotiated between tourists and actors kin the places they visit. These trends link to wider debates about the production of space and place, and the rise of new localities in a globalizing world. Destinations increasingly need to deal with the rise of new tourist spaces, changes in the tourism distribution chain and growing competition from other destinations.
These changes suggest an increasingly uncertain future for destinations worldwide. Where will tourists go next? Which new intermediaries will emerge? How will tourists arrange their travel in future? What kind of experiences will be in vogue, and how will these impact on the destinations themselves?
