Resignificación del patrimonio paleontológico presente en el río San Pedro (Cuenca del río Valdivia, Chile)

Abstract: An anthropological perspective is used to explore the direct and/or indirect meanings and uses attributed to the paleontological heritage of River San Pedro by the locals (Región de los Ríos, Chile). The goal of this study was to understand how paleontological heritage is resignified in an inhabited, biodiverse and productive rural territory. The specific historical context of each population has a bearing on the significance attached to their fossil deposits, giving rise to multiple interpretations of the same but sharing the common consideration as basic elements of their culture and sense of place. It is suggested that communication between the scientists and the locals be established under the auspices of local and regional authorities in order to share professional and local heritage know-how to mutual benefit.

Resumen: El presente artículo explora, desde una perspectiva antropológica, los significados y usos atribuidos al patrimonio paleontológico presente en el río San Pedro (Región de Los Ríos, Chile), por parte de habitantes que se relacionan directa o indirectamente con éste. El objetivo de este acercamiento fue comprender la resignificación del patrimonio paleontológico en un territorio rural habitado, biodiverso y productivo. De esta manera, se da cuenta de la multiplicidad de significados atribuidos a los yacimientos fosilíferos, de acuerdo al contexto histórico particular que vivencia la población local, entendidos los fósiles como parte constitutiva del territorio. Finalmente, se sugiere establecer un diálogo entre el saber científico, el saber local y la gestión institucional, especialmente considerando la escasa la difusión científica de este patrimonio en una comunidad que anhela saber de él.
